music

Many people who enjoy dancing Salsa love the music traditionally played at Salsa events, however more and more frequently we hear that people are put off coming because they don't like the music or would prefer more variety. So at Salsa Moderna we have come up with a unique blend of music to suit a wide range of tastes. We love variety, so our music is a mix of traditional salsa tunes, with salsa-friendly Latin pop and salsa remixes of popular chart hits from the last 50 years. We mix contemporary with traditional to give a flavour of old meets new which embodies the eclectic spirit of Salsa Moderna. The one thing all the music has in common is that it makes you want to move your feet! We hope you enjoy our choice of music and are always open to suggestions.

dancing

We dance salsa, but we love fusion so you will often see us mix elements of other dance styles (such as Tango, West Coast Swing or Ballroom) into our moves. After all, the history of salsa includes the absorption of many different cultures and movements which is why there are so many varied forms of salsa that exist worldwide today - for example, LA salsa is very different to Cuban salsa. We also feel this gives us greater scope for creativity, interest and expression and enables us to adapt our dance style to different types of music, for instance we might dance traditional salsa moves to a cuban track but to a modern salsa remix we might add more west coast swing or hip hop inspired salsa moves to suit the music. Interpreting the music is important to us; to something fast and furious we could choose flashy moves with quick turns, lots of dips and tricks, but to a slower romantic song we might favour close hold simple moves and concentrate more on partner connection and subtle body movements. We like to encourage creativity and musicality in our students but above all we like you to have fun.

lessons

We offer 3 classes per night: Complete beginners 8pm, Improvers or Building blocks 8.30pm (suitable for all levels) and Intermediates or Moves & Routines 9pm (confident beginners welcome but aimed at higher levels)

Different dance companies have different approaches to teaching. Some will teach you a whole routine, others will teach you moves that you can link together into a routine. However, some of these moves are in themselves quite complicated and made up of smaller components that we like to think of as building blocks. These building blocks can combine together in many, many ways to create hundreds of moves. What we do at Salsa Moderna is teach you these building blocks first then simply suggest interesting ways you can use them to mix and match and create more complex movements. This we feel is the fastest way to get you a good sized repertoire without having to memorise lots of long complicated routines.

practice area

There is a separate area at our Guildford and Farnborough venues for those who wish to practice rather than attend the class - for instance beginners can use the practice area during intermediate classes and intermediates can use it during beginners classes. In the practice area people can have a dance, practice their moves and socialise. It is a great opportunity for sharing skills and knowledge with one another as well as meeting people. Often at dance events we don't get the opportunity to stop and chat so our practice area is a friendly relaxed environment in which to do this. It is available for the entire duration of the lessons after which the whole room is dedicated to social dancing. Whenever possible during intermediate classes we have an experienced dancer onhand in the practise area to assist beginners and improvers in remembering the moves.

salsa line dancing

We start every evening, before the complete beginners class with a simple solo routine participants can dance without a partner. This is suitable for all levels and gives beginners a good start with what is involved with the footwork as well as being a fun dance that can be used later in the evening. It also acts as a warm up for the major muscles involved in dancing. This routine will be the same every week.

We also run salsa line dancing or salsafit classes at local leisure centres around Surrey. Some of these are for private memebers-only health clubs but we do currently have public classes at Godalming Leisure Centre every Thursday at 6-7pm. This is ideal for anyone wishing to work on their shines, get some exercise and also for those who prefer not to dance with a partner.
